Custom cables
I make most my cables from scratch and have also done several tutorials on how to make cables. What I like to do is experiment with different ways of making cables, materials, casings etc. As a result of that I end up with a lot of “prototype”-cables which I made because I wanted to test a new method of doing something, not because I actually need the cable.
I get a lot of requests about making people custom cables, especially on Head-Fi. I don’t really like mass producing anything, and the profit I could make isn’t really that interesting either since I don’t want to overcharge and reasonable international prices for such cables would be very little when compared to the wage I get at a Norwegian summer job. As such, I don’t really want to take on too many custom jobs since it’s a hassle I don’t really make money on (or rather I’m not willing to become that greedy).
My experimentation does however leave me with a lot of cables that just collect dust, cables that other people could actually use. Therefore I though I’d create this page to sell the leftover prototype cables I have lying around to whoever’s interested.
There are a few conditions to these sales. First off, being prototype cables, it’s the first time I’ve made a cable using that specific method and I therefore cannot guarantee how long it will hold up. I stress test everything as well as checking that the channels are connected correctly, but although I haven’t ever had any finished cable die on me that’s not to say it will never happen. As such the cables are offered as shown on the pictures with the guarantee that they work properly when I ship them.
With regards to shipping, Norway is a fucked up county. Sending something as small as a cable anywhere in the world via air mail costs only a few bucks. The big price jump comes if you want registered air mail, where the minimum rate is about $20. In other (normal) countries, making a letter registered is just a small extra fee. As a result of this fucked up system, the prices shown here include unregistered shipping. I cannot take responsibility for what the mail service does ocne they get their hands on the envelope, and without it being registered there’s no way to track the letters. Therefore all shipments are on the buyer’s risk, both with regard to damages and missing packages. The low volume of sales I do and the low prices makes it impossible to carry any sort of accountability for what the mail people do.
Lastly, I have made (as I already mentioned) a lot of tutorials for how to make various cables. I urge people to use those to make your own cables before buying anything here, that way you’ll get exactly what you want and can spend more time with details than I bother doing with prototype cables that aren’t meant to be used. Combined, these tutorials should give you the basic idea of how to make your own cables. The tutorials I have done are:
How to make a tiny interconnect
If none of these can help you (or if you don’t have the equipment or will to try) browse the available prototype cables below to see if anyone will do the job. The price is calculated based on materials cost, shipping, packaging cost and a small addition on top to make the sale worthwhile. Still the prices should be low compared to anywhere else.
