The curse of the script tag

Posted at 23:55 on May 21st 2009 in Site related

Been doing some redecorating on the site today, going from the black theme I started out with and on to something a bit more professional looking. The process of starting a website isn’t that hard, but a simple code tag in the wrong place can really screw things up…

The whole problem started with trying to get a static image in the sidebar (the one that’s now a slideshow under “articles on other sites”). I got pointed to “Ultimate Fade-in Slideshow” and follow the instructions. Since I don’t want a bunch of code in my header I made the script external, which in short terms means you save it in a separate file and just adds a link to it in the website code. It didn’t work.

After trying to figure out what the problem was for a LONG while and even help from #wordpress on freenode on IRC I got nowhere and gave up, taking Kismo for a walk instead. When I came back I tried again…and finally found the problem.

The problem was an extra < /script > tag at the end of the code in the javascript document I’d saved. When you make a script external like I did you’re supposed to delete those tags, but I only deleted one. As a result, it didn’t work. I was of course thrilled to find the problem, but bugs that small is really annoying in heinsight.

Either way, it works now, and I added another slideshow showing my favorite podcast. Looks nice, if you ask me. The design overall looks much better now than the black styled theme did, and while some have commented it looks sterile I think it looks clean.
